Alvin CC Softball Splits with first place Galveston at home, Vinton throws complete game shutout.
ACC lost the first game of the doubleheader 3-0, but earned a 6-0 victory in the second game.
The first game was a pitcher's duel early, but an error in right field allowed two runs to score for the Whitecaps in the top of the third inning. Galveston would add another run on an RBI single in the top of the fourth. ACC had the bases loaded with nobody out in the bottom of the seventh, but did not score a run, ultimately falling 3-0. ACC outhit Galveston 6-3, but could not string them together in the correct order to get on the board. ACC's starter BeAnka Galan pitched four innings, allowing just one earned run. Sophie Brammer pitched a masterful final three innings, not allowing a single base runner. Caitlyn Garza went 2-3 at the plate in that first game.
Game two of the doubleheader was quickly a different story, with ACC scoring a run in the bottom of the first on a Savannah Salazar RBI Double. Alyssa Keene dropped down a beautiful bunt that drove in Alexia Arambula in the bottom of the second. ACC extended the lead to 3-0 when BeAnka Galan singled in Grace Coleman. Caitlyn Garza later drove in Galan, as ACC took a 4-0 lead into the fifth inning. Hazel Martinez scored on a wild pitch and Emili Garza drove in Keene with an RBI groundout in the bottom of the fifth to make it 6-0 and that was a wrap for the scoring. ACC once again outhit Galveston, 11-4, with Grace Coleman going 3-4, and Izzy Doggett and Caitlyn Garza getting two hits apiece. Haley Vinton was an escape artist, pitching out of danger in the second, fifth and sixth innings, all innings in which the Whitecaps had two runners on base. Vinton's complete game shutout against the first place Whitecaps was one of the best performances of her career, as she only allowed four hits and struck out four. Vinton has turned it on at the right time, allowing just 1 earned run across her two starts this week, going all seven innings in both starts.
ACC takes a 10-12 conference record into their final matchup of the season, a doubleheader at home against Lamar-Port Arthur on Wednesday, April 23rd, with heavy playoff implications on the line. The fifth place Seahawks have their work cut out for them as they have to play two games against third place San Jac and two games against fourth place Alvin in order to try to climb into the top four playoff spots.
