Alvin CC Softball Sweeps Angelina
ACC Softball won the first game of the Doubleheader by a score of 7-1, before taking the second game 7-2.
ACC entered Monday's games with a 7-11 conference record and needed to win the majority of their six remaining games. The Dolphins struck first in the bottom of the third inning, on a Hazel Martinez two run double. BeAnka Galan drove in Martinez a few batters later with an RBI single. ACC scored again in the bottom of the fourth, with an RBI sacrifice bunt from Izzy Doggett. Martinez then doubled again, scoring Alexia Arambula. Yaya Silva drove in Martinez once more with an RBI single. Leading 6-0 entering the bottom of the fifth inning, the Dolphins came close to a run rule, scoring a run on an Alexia Arambula RBI double that drove in Alyssa Keene. Angelina finally got on the board in the top of the sixth inning with an RBI single from River Hulsey. ACC closed out the top of the seventh, winning 7-1, and notching 11 hits. The Dolphins starting pitcher Sophie Brammer went seven innings, with just one run and six strikeouts. Martinez's two doubles and three RBI's were huge for ACC.
Game two began with ACC's Yaya Silva scoring the first run of the game on an RBI ground out from Savannah Salazar in the bottom of the first inning. Angelina answered back with a run on an error in the top of the second and then took the lead in the top of the fourth on an RBI single. ACC tied it at 2-2 when Caitlyn Garza drove in Alyssa Keene on an RBI single. Izzy Jacoby gave the Dolphins a 3-2 lead on an RBI single that scored Garza. Doggett increased the lead when she scored on a passed ball, and then a two run single from Silva drove in Jacoby and Martinez. ACC added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth on an Emili Garza RBI single that drove in Silva, making it a 7-2 lead headed to the top of the seventh. Haley Vinton closed the door and finished with a complete game, allowing just one earned run and striking out four. Silva was a big contributor in game two, going 2-3 with two RBI's and scored two runs.
ACC Softball's sweep of Angelina increased the Dolphins chances of making the playoffs. ACC has just four games left in the season, against Galveston on Wednesday, and the season finale against Lamar-Port Arthur next Wednesday, who the Dolphins are currently tied with in the standings.
